How your answers are marked

Some questions are marked the moment you answer. Others wait for a person. Knowing which is which explains most of what you will see.

Marked immediately

Five of the six types. You see straight away whether you were right, and the points go onto your total.

Multiple choice

Right or wrong, with nothing in between.

Fill in the blank

Compared against the answer or answers the author listed. It ignores:

  • Capital letters — Jerusalem and jerusalem are the same.
  • Extra spaces at either end, or doubled spaces inside.
  • A full stop, comma or question mark on the end.

It does not ignore anything else. A synonym, a different spelling, or the right answer with an extra word is marked wrong — even when you plainly knew it. That is the single most common reason to ask for a mark to be looked at, and asking is the right thing to do.

Choose all that apply, put in order, and matching pairs

All three are all or nothing. Every correct option ticked and no incorrect ones; every item in its place; every pair right. Five pairs correct out of six scores zero.

Marked by a person

A written answer cannot be marked automatically. Yours shows as waiting until an instructor or assistant reads it and gives it a score, and possibly some feedback.

How long that takes is up to them. Grapevine does not chase it.

A mark is not final

Whoever runs your course can change any mark, including one the software gave. They can award full or partial credit once they have read what you actually wrote.

So if a question was marked wrong and you think you had it, say so — especially on a blank you answered in different words, or an all-or-nothing question you nearly got. See Seeing your results for how to ask in a way that gets an answer quickly.

One attempt

You normally get one go at each question, and re-reading the lesson does not give you another. If you need one, ask.
