Pricing a course

Also in Instructors

A price goes on the course’s Enrollment settings. Leave it empty or at zero and the course is free.

Before you can charge

Your site needs Stripe connected, or there is nothing for a learner to pay into. See Taking card payments with Stripe. A price on a site with no Stripe account is a course nobody can buy.

The currency

Set for the whole site, not per course, in Site Admin. Every price on the site is in it.

Changing the currency changes the unit, not the numbers. A course priced at 95 becomes 95 of the new currency. Set the currency before you price anything.

Who gets the money

Your organisation’s Stripe account, not Grapevine’s. Grapevine takes its fee separately — refunds, receipts and disputes are between you and the learner, and are handled in your own Stripe dashboard.

Changing a price

Takes effect immediately for anybody who has not yet enrolled. People already on the course are unaffected — they paid what it cost at the time, and nothing is refunded or charged retrospectively.

Adding somebody by hand to a priced course

This is the behaviour worth knowing, because it surprises people.

If you add somebody to a priced course from the register, no payment is taken and the site is not billed for that enrolment. The assumption behind it is that a priced course gets paid for at the learner’s own checkout, so a manual addition is somebody being let in deliberately — a staff member, a replacement, a complimentary place.

It means a priced course is also the cheapest way to enrol a large group by hand, which is either a convenience or a trap depending on whether you meant it. On a free course, each manual enrolment is billable in the ordinary way — see Adding someone to a course.
