Modules and lessons
Also in ContributorsA course has two levels. Modules group things; lessons are the things. A learner sees modules as collapsible headings with lessons inside them.
Adding a module
- On the course page, choose Manage → Add Module.
- Give it a name.
- Optionally add a summary, which appears under the name in the outline.
- Save.
Modules appear in the order you create them, and you can drag them into any order afterwards.
Adding a lesson
- Choose Manage → Add Lesson.
- Name it and pick the module it belongs in.
- Save, then open it to write the content — see The lesson editor.
Lessons with no module
The module dropdown offers no module. A lesson chosen that way sits directly in the course outline, with no heading above it and nothing to expand.
This is how you make a course that is a single video: one lesson, no module. A course with exactly one lesson opens straight into it rather than showing an outline of one — the learner sees the thing they came for without a click that carries no decision.
You can mix the two. A course can open with a standalone “Start here” lesson and then have modules below it.
How many lessons in a module
No rule, but two things are worth knowing. The outline shows a lesson count per module, so a module of fourteen reads as heavy before anybody opens it. And if the course releases in stages, the module is the unit that opens — so a module is also a week’s work, or whatever your pacing is. See Releasing modules on a schedule.
Deleting
Both can be deleted from the pencil tools beside them in the outline. Deleting a module does not delete the lessons inside it — they are left without a module, which puts them in the outline directly. Move them before you delete if that is not what you want.
