Withdrawing someone
Also in Site adminsWithdrawing takes somebody off a course. It is on their row in the register — Manage → Enrollment.
What it does
- The course disappears from their My Courses.
- They can no longer open its lessons.
- They stay on the site and keep every other course they are on.
What it does not do
It does not delete their work. Their answers, marks and progress are all kept. Enrol them again and everything is where they left it — which makes an accidental withdrawal entirely recoverable, and means withdrawing somebody is not a way to let them start again.
It does not refund anything. If they paid for the course, taking them off it does not return their money; that is a refund you issue in Stripe. If the enrolment was billable to your site, the charge is not reversed either.
It does not free up a bought place. A place used from an invitation stays used.
You cannot withdraw yourself
Deliberate: it is the one action here that nobody else can undo for you. If you genuinely need to come off a course you run, ask another instructor or a site administrator.
When to use something else
- Somebody has left the organisation entirely. Removing their site access is the broader action, and takes every course with it — see People on your site.
- You want to stop new people joining rather than remove the ones already on. That is the enrolment setting — see Who may enrol, and how.
- Somebody enrolled by mistake and has done nothing. Withdrawing is right, and worth doing promptly if the course has a place limit.
Who can do it
Instructors and site administrators. Assistants cannot — they can read the register but not change it, because adding and removing people is administration rather than marking.
