Reordering modules and lessons
Also in ContributorsThe outline is the order learners meet the course in, and you change it by dragging.
Dragging
With editing tools visible, each module and lesson has a grip handle. Drag it:
- A lesson within its module — straight up or down.
- A lesson into another module — open both and drag across. The lesson changes module as well as position.
- A whole module — by the handle on its heading. Its lessons travel with it.
The new order saves as you drop it.
Two modules can be open at once while you are editing, which is what makes dragging between them possible. For a reader only one opens at a time, so the outline stays short.
What the order decides
- What Next does in the reader. It follows the outline, so a lesson out of order sends people somewhere unexpected.
- The lesson numbering a learner sees — “4 of 22”.
- The order of the release schedule, if the course opens in stages. The schedule is a list of modules in outline order, so reordering modules reorders it.
Reordering a course people are already on
Safe, and worth understanding. Nobody’s progress is lost: progress is recorded against the lesson itself, not against a position, so somebody who finished lesson 4 still has it finished when it becomes lesson 6.
What does change is what they see next. If a learner is partway through, reordering changes where Next takes them — which is usually the point, but is worth a note to them if the course is running.
Reordering modules on a course that releases in stages moves the schedule with them. Open the Release settings afterwards and check the dates still say what you meant — see Releasing modules on a schedule.
